Inside The Enigma

Jordyn Rattler is an undergraduate student, scriptwriter, and aspiring filmmaker at Howard University. Jordyn is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in TV & Film Production, with a minor in Electronic Studio Art.

With their passion for storytelling and visual art, their portfolio features mixed media art, illustration, character design, storyboard panels, and short-form scripts. Coming out of their undergraduate education, Jordyn actively plans to have a few established film credits under their belt, as well as start their professional career as an animator and scriptwriter for television.

As their animation and writing career progresses, they eventually want to transition into directing and producing for animation and have a special interest in DreamWorks Animation, Cartoon Network, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, FX, Passion Pictures, and Monkeypaw Productions.

Currently teaching themselves 2D animation and writing a feature-length film, Jordyn is actively preparing for their future career in the entertainment industry.

Having had the opportunity to mentor with and work for the Walt Disney Company, as well as scriptwriting for the Howard University Film Organization’s latest production (Where Is Everybody At?), Jordyn is hyper-focused on expanding their network, building their artistic portfolio, and working in collaborative spaces.

Once they have a few years of professional experience and the financial means to do so, Jordyn aspires to open up a production studio that focuses on BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and neurodivergent stories within the Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Magical Realism genres.

“I create because I love the art of creation. Starting with absolutely nothing, to conceptualizing something into reality, there’s magic within that. It’s mystical, enthralling, and empowering, which is what my work exemplifies. Whether it be a script, a painting, animation, digital media, or a novel, my work is based in the surreal and whimsical. It is weird, experimental, and unconventional in ways that often lend to deeper meaning, but sometimes, it simply exists to catch someone’s eye.

I draw aesthetical inspiration from artists who push boundaries within their field (Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Jordan Peele, Alberto Mielgo, Hayao Miyazaki, Lolita Lorenzo, N.K Jemison), but my greatest inspiration stems from my lived experiences. I take what I find intriguing about being African American, Central American, Queer, autistic, born of the 2000s, and craft it into a visual mixed media or interdisciplinary format that showcases my ambition. I have an immense passion for working outside the box.

Although I make my art for me, I’m beginning to share it with the world via digital platforms.

As a survivor, what has pulled me out of my darkest moments was art and the creations of other visionaries: books, movies, shows, and other media that brought me happiness and imaginary worlds that I could escape into.

If another individual’s creative material was able to instill hope and show me that life is worth living, then I figure, my work can do the same. That is why I am pursuing a professional career as a mixed-media artist, filmmaker, and scriptwriter. I seek to inspire, uplift, and destigmatize marginalized groups through art and storytelling. I don’t know or even predict what the scope of my legacy might be; as long as I am in a creative sphere, flexing my artistry, I am ever excited for the life I lead.”

I believe talent is just a pursued interest. Anybody can do what I do.
